If the weather holds you could be taking this time to till up the garden if you wish. You would be getting a jump on expediting the rotting process of the leaves you spread over the garden; and your neighbors won’t be putting pins in their “you” doll because your next year’s fertilizing plan isn’t blowing all over their cleanly raked yard.
To get the rotting process started now will make nitrogen available when your veggies start growing next Spring. During the decomposing of any green material, be it manure, leaves, or vegetable waste, will lock up the nitrogen and make it unattainable to the surrounding live plants and seeds. Once the “composting” is done, or close to being done, the nitrogen is freed up.
So be a good gardener, and a great neighbor and “deep six (inches that is)” those leaves.
