The tree
with a heart, heart shaped leaves that is; but that comes later. Now they are
flowering up and down their branches and stems in a color that looks more like
pinkish purple and red.
Red Buds grow
to about 25 feet tall with an equal spread. They don’t mind a little shade,
and grow in any well drained soil. Fall leaf color is yellow.
I have planted
these trees by patios because of their long horizontal branching that gives it
a partial canopy affect.
A not so
stellar bit of trivia, the Redbud is also known as the Judas tree. According to
legend, Judas Iscariot hanged himself on a redbud species.
Aside from this dark figure in
history the Red Bud is a beautiful tree throughout all three seasons, and even
into the winter with this horizontal branching.
