Till It Up & Rot ‘em Down

If the weather holds you could be taking this time to till up the garden if you wish. You would be getting a jump on drying out the soil and expediting the rotting process of the leaves you spread over the garden this past fall.

To hurry up the rotting process will make nitrogen available when your veggies start growing. During the decomposing of any green material, be it manure, leaves, or vegetable waste, the nitrogen is locked up and unattainable to the surrounding live plants and seeds. Once the “composting” is done, or close to being done, the nitrogen is freed up.
